We had two days of great winter climbing conditions over the weekend here in North Wales so I headed into the hills with Pete Harrison and Jon Ratcliffe. Pete was trying a radical new route (which I can't say too much about) and Jon and I tried Blenderhead VII/8 on Clogwyn Ddu. I'd heard that then crux of this route was pretty tough now that a crucial bit of turf had been ripped out of the flared groove. This proved to be true and the back of the groove contained only poorly consolidated snow which didn't offer a solid axe placement. With no other option it was a case of "pull and hope for the best", unfortunately on this occasion "the best" didn't happen and I took quite an exciting 10 metre fall. Attempt number 2 ended with me hanging upside down from my crampon when it got caught in my protection during the fall and because I dropped an axe in the process we had to retreat. Next time...
