Interpersonal Neurobiology

I've just started a course in Interpersonal Neurobiology with the Mindsight Institute (founded by Dan Siegel).  Interpersonal Neurobiology pulls together thinking and research relating human development from sciences including:

Anthropology
Biology (developmental, evolution, genetics, zoology)
Cognitive Science
Computer Science
Developmental Psychopathology
Linguistics
Neuroscience (affective, cognitive, developmental, social)
Mathematics
Mental Health
Physics
Psychiatry
Psychology (cognitive, developmental, evolutionary, experimental, of religion, social, attachment theory, memory)
Sociology
Systems Theory (chaos and complexity theory)

Interpersonal neurobiology weaves research from these areas into a consilient framework that examines the common findings among independent disciplines and gives us crucial knowledge about how the mind, brain and relationships influence each other to shape who we are and how we develop.

Winter Climbing

We had two days of great winter climbing conditions over the weekend here in North Wales so I headed into the hills with Pete Harrison and Jon Ratcliffe.  Pete was trying a radical new route (which I can't say too much about) and Jon and I tried Blenderhead VII/8 on Clogwyn Ddu.  I'd heard that then crux of this route was pretty tough now that a crucial bit of turf had been ripped out of the flared groove.  This proved to be true and the back of the groove contained only poorly consolidated snow which didn't offer a solid axe placement.  With no other option it was a case of "pull and hope for the best", unfortunately on this occasion "the best" didn't happen and I took quite an exciting 10 metre fall.  Attempt number 2 ended with me hanging upside down from my crampon when it got caught in my protection during the fall and because I dropped an axe in the process we had to retreat.  Next time...

Neuroscience and Coaching

A couple of weeks ago I attended a really interesting neuroscience and coaching workshop run by Ann Betz and   Jacek SkrzypczyƄski. This is the brain science behind how coaching - by increasing emotional awareness and skill - creates transformational positive changes in behaviour, and explains what's physically going on in the brain when this happens.  This short video is a great whistle stop tour of how this works and it also touches on the health and performance benefits.  This emerging knowledge is as relevant to children and parents as it is to business leaders.
If, like me, you're interested in this stuff it's well worth checking out the work of Dan Siegel and David Rock.

Team Development Coaching

Working with Andy Williams from Sykes Fairbairn today, running a team development workshop for a project team from a major UK construction company. We used some experiential activity to generate greater awareness, build relationships and create more productive business based discussion and learning.
